What rhinoplasty can address
Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose by modifying its bone and cartilage framework. It may be performed for aesthetic reasons, such as reducing a dorsal hump, refining the tip or narrowing the nasal bones, or for functional reasons, such as improving breathing. When the internal septum is corrected at the same time, the procedure is often called septorhinoplasty.
The aim of a well-planned rhinoplasty is a nose that suits the rest of the face and functions well, rather than a particular template. Small changes can have a significant effect on facial balance, which is why detailed analysis and honest discussion of goals are so important.
Consultation and planning
Many international patients begin with an online assessment, sending standardised photographs of the face from the front, sides, oblique angles and base confidentially. This allows a preliminary discussion of goals and suitability, but an in-person examination in Istanbul, including an internal examination of the nose, is needed before surgery is confirmed.
Your surgeon should ask about breathing difficulties, previous nasal injury or surgery, allergies and any history of body image concerns. Some surgeons use photographic simulation to discuss goals; this is a communication tool, not a promise of the outcome. Reviewing consented before and after photographs of noses similar to yours is helpful. Results vary between individuals.
- What specifically bothers you about your nose, and from which angle
- Any breathing problems, snoring or nasal blockage
- Previous trauma, surgery or filler to the nose
- Your expectations for how natural or refined the result should look
Open, closed and preservation techniques
In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils, allowing direct visualisation of the cartilage. This is often preferred for complex tip work or revision surgery. The resulting scar is usually discreet once healed.
Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions inside the nostrils only, avoiding an external scar, and may suit certain changes. Preservation rhinoplasty describes techniques that lower a hump while preserving the natural dorsal structure. Cartilage grafts, typically from the septum and occasionally from the ear or rib, may be used to provide support.
The technique should be chosen to suit your anatomy and goals. Surgery generally takes around two to four hours under general anaesthesia, and many patients stay one night in hospital.
Recovery and how long to stay in Istanbul
An external splint is usually worn for around a week, and internal splints or packing, if used, are often removed within the first few days to a week. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common in the first one to two weeks. Breathing through the nose is often restricted at first because of internal swelling.
A stay of around seven to ten days is often suggested so that the splint can be removed and your surgeon can review healing before you fly. Many patients return to desk-based work after around one to two weeks. Contact sports and activities with a risk of facial impact are usually avoided for longer, and glasses resting on the nasal bridge may need to be avoided for several weeks.
The nose continues to change for a long time. Most swelling settles over the first few months, but the tip, particularly with thicker skin, can take twelve months or more to fully refine.
Risks to understand
Recognised risks include bleeding and nosebleeds, infection, prolonged swelling, breathing difficulty, septal perforation, asymmetry, contour irregularities, altered sensation of the nasal skin or teeth, and dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result. A proportion of patients seek revision rhinoplasty, which is typically more complex than the primary operation.
Flying soon after nasal surgery may cause discomfort due to pressure changes and swelling, and long journeys carry a general risk of thrombosis after any operation. Your surgeon will advise when it is reasonable to travel.
Choosing a surgeon in Istanbul
Rhinoplasty is performed by plastic surgeons and by ENT (otolaryngology) surgeons with facial plastic training. What matters is verifiable specialist registration, specific and substantial experience in rhinoplasty, and a consistent approach you can see in consented case photographs. Depending on the surgeon and procedure, treatments may be performed at leading private hospitals in Istanbul, including LIV Hospital Vadistanbul, Memorial Bahçelievler and selected Acıbadem hospitals.
Cost in Turkey depends on the surgeon, the complexity of the work, whether septal or graft surgery is needed, whether it is a primary or revision procedure, hospital, anaesthesia and accommodation. A personalised written quote follows assessment. Choose your surgeon and hospital based on medical quality, not price alone.
An individual decision
Every nose is different, and so is every patient's healing. Skin thickness, ethnicity, previous surgery and breathing function all shape what is achievable. An honest, individual assessment by a qualified surgeon is essential before deciding whether rhinoplasty is right for you.
Taking time between consultation and surgery to reflect on the proposed plan is sensible. If your surgeon advises that a smaller change, a functional procedure only, or no surgery at all would serve you better, that advice deserves careful consideration.
