Body Contouring
Liposuction in Istanbul
Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat through small incisions using a thin suction cannula. It is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment, and is most suitable for women at a stable weight with good skin elasticity. Results vary between individuals.

What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, sometimes called lipoplasty or liposculpture, is a surgical procedure that removes fat cells from specific areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs, knees, upper arms and under the chin. A tumescent solution containing a local anaesthetic and adrenaline is usually infiltrated first to reduce bleeding and discomfort, and fat is then removed through small incisions with a cannula. Techniques such as power-assisted, ultrasound-assisted or laser-assisted liposuction may be used depending on your surgeon's training and the tissue being treated.
Liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment and does not treat cellulite or loose skin. It is most effective for women whose weight has been stable for some months, whose body mass index is within a range their surgeon considers safe, and who have good skin tone so that the skin can retract over the new contour. Where skin is loose, a lift procedure such as a tummy tuck may be more appropriate, sometimes combined with liposuction.
Who may be suitable?
- You have localised fat deposits that persist despite a healthy diet and regular exercise
- Your weight has been stable for several months and you plan to maintain it
- Your BMI is within a range your surgeon considers safe for the extent of liposuction planned
- You have reasonable skin elasticity without significant laxity
- You are a non-smoker or willing to stop well before and after surgery
- You have no uncontrolled medical conditions and no untreated clotting disorder
- You have realistic expectations about contour improvement rather than weight reduction
What can this procedure address?
- Stubborn fat on the abdomen, flanks or lower back
- Fullness of the inner or outer thighs and knees
- Excess fat on the upper arms
- Submental fullness under the chin
- Disproportion between upper and lower body
Consultation & assessment
Your assessment usually begins online. You can send photos confidentially along with your medical history, current weight and height, medications and any previous surgery, so that an independent surgeon can give an initial opinion on whether liposuction is likely to suit you and which areas could reasonably be treated in one session.
Before surgery is confirmed, you will have an in-person examination in Istanbul. Your surgeon will assess fat distribution, skin quality and any muscle separation, take measurements and photographs, review blood tests and discuss the limits of safe fat removal, your risk of thrombosis and the post-operative plan, including compression garments.
How the procedure is performed
After marking the treatment areas with you standing, the surgeon makes small incisions, often a few millimetres long, placed in natural creases where possible. Tumescent fluid is infiltrated to numb the tissue and reduce bleeding, and a cannula is then moved through the fat layer in a controlled pattern to remove fat while preserving a smooth layer beneath the skin.
The amount of fat removed in one session is limited for safety, since large-volume liposuction involves greater fluid shifts and a higher risk of complications. Your surgeon will plan the volume according to your health, the number of areas and the setting. At the end of the procedure the incisions are closed or left to drain, and a compression garment is applied.
Anaesthesia
Most liposuction involving several areas is performed under general anaesthesia administered by an anaesthesiologist. Smaller areas may be treated under local anaesthesia with sedation. Your anaesthesia team will review your health, medications and clotting risk beforehand.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Swelling, bruising and soreness are expected, and some tumescent fluid may leak from incisions. You will wear a compression garment and walk regularly to support circulation.
Week 1
Discomfort usually eases. Many women return to light daily activities. Your surgeon will review you before you fly, often around days 5–7.
Weeks 2–3
Bruising fades and desk-based work is usually possible. Compression is continued as advised, often day and night.
Week 6
Most swelling has reduced and your surgeon may allow a gradual return to strenuous exercise. Compression may be reduced.
3–6 months
Residual swelling settles and the new contour becomes clearer. Skin continues to adapt.
12 months
Final contour is usually visible. Results vary between individuals.
What to expect during the first week
- Wear your compression garment as instructed, usually continuously except for showering
- Walk short distances several times a day to lower the risk of blood clots
- Expect fluid drainage from incisions in the first one to two days
- Take prescribed pain relief and any anticoagulant medication exactly as directed
- Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol
- Attend your follow-up check before travelling home
When can I fly?
Most surgeons advise waiting around 5–7 days before a short-haul flight and often 7–10 days before long-haul travel, depending on the extent of liposuction. Flying increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis, so wear your compression garment and compression stockings if advised, stay hydrated, walk the aisle regularly and follow any anticoagulant instructions from your surgeon.
When can I return to work?
Desk-based work is usually possible after 1–2 weeks. Physically demanding roles may require 3–4 weeks. You may still feel tired and swollen for some time, so plan a gradual return.
When can I exercise?
Gentle walking starts on the day of surgery. Light exercise can usually resume after 2–3 weeks and strenuous exercise, including high-impact training and core work, typically after 4–6 weeks once your surgeon is satisfied with your healing.
Scars
Incisions are small and placed discreetly where possible. They often appear pink at first and usually fade over 6–12 months, although some women develop more visible or pigmented scars depending on skin type.
Results
Some improvement is visible early, but swelling hides the final contour for several months. Liposuction refines shape rather than reducing weight noticeably on the scales. Consented before and after photographs from your surgeon can be reviewed during consultation to help set realistic expectations. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?
Fat cells removed by liposuction do not return, but remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain, including in untreated areas. Maintaining a stable weight is the most important factor in preserving your result over the long term.
Potential risks and complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and individual risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.
- Contour irregularities, rippling or dents, sometimes requiring revision
- Seroma (fluid collection) that may need drainage
- Bleeding, bruising and haematoma
- Infection at incision sites
- Prolonged swelling and changes in skin sensation or numbness
- Asymmetry between treated sides
- Skin laxity if skin does not retract over the new contour
- Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism (VTE)
- Fat embolism, a rare but serious complication
- Fluid imbalance or anaesthetic complications, more likely with large volumes
Choosing a surgeon
- Confirm the surgeon's specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery
- Verify registration with the Turkish Medical Association and membership of relevant professional societies
- Ask about experience with liposuction of the specific areas you wish to treat
- Review consented before and after photographs of comparable patients
- Check that surgery takes place in a hospital where the surgeon holds privileges, with a clear aftercare plan

Liposuction: frequently asked questions
Is liposuction a weight-loss treatment?
No. Liposuction removes localised fat to improve shape. It is not intended to reduce overall weight and is most effective when you are already close to a stable, maintainable weight.
How long should I stay in Istanbul?
Typically 7–10 days, depending on how many areas are treated and how you recover. Your surgeon will review you before confirming you are fit to travel.
When can I fly home after liposuction?
Often after 5–7 days for short flights and 7–10 days for long-haul, subject to your surgeon's review. Compression, hydration and moving during the flight help reduce thrombosis risk.
How much does liposuction cost in Turkey?
The cost depends on the surgeon, hospital, anaesthesia, number of areas, combined procedures, hospital stay and accommodation. You receive a personalised written quote after assessment.
How long do I need to wear a compression garment?
Most surgeons recommend wearing it continuously for the first few weeks and then during the day for a further period, often around 4–6 weeks in total. Follow your surgeon's specific advice.
Will I see results immediately and can I see before and after photos?
Some change is visible early, but swelling takes months to settle. Consented before and after photographs can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.
Can liposuction treat loose skin or cellulite?
No. Liposuction removes fat but does not tighten significantly loose skin or treat cellulite. If skin laxity is present, a tummy tuck or lift procedure may be recommended.
