Why the length of stay matters
The time you spend in Istanbul after surgery is not simply a matter of convenience. It allows your surgeon to review you during the period when early complications such as bleeding, haematoma or infection are most likely to appear, to remove drains or stitches, and to confirm that you are mobile and fit to fly.
It also reduces the risk associated with long flights in the first days after surgery, when the tendency to form blood clots is raised. Planning an adequate stay is one of the most practical steps you can take to support a safe recovery.
Typical stay ranges by procedure family
The ranges below are general guidance only and are often suggested for uncomplicated recovery. Your surgeon may recommend a shorter or longer stay depending on your procedure, health and progress.
These ranges assume a single procedure with an uncomplicated recovery. When several procedures are combined, the recommended stay usually follows the longest of them, and sometimes extends beyond it.
- Dental aesthetics (veneers, crowns, whitening): often several days to around a week, depending on the number of visits needed; implants usually involve separate trips
- Intimate procedures (labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction): often around five to seven days
- Vaginoplasty, perineoplasty and combined intimate procedures: often around seven to ten days
- Breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction: often around seven to ten days
- Liposuction or 360 liposuction: often around seven to ten days
- Facial surgery (rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty): often around seven to ten days
- Facelift and neck lift: often around ten to fourteen days
- Tummy tuck, BBL, body lift or mommy makeover: often around ten to fourteen days
What happens during your stay
Most patients arrive a day or two before surgery to allow for an in-person consultation, examination, blood tests and any pre-operative assessments. This also gives time to recover from travel and to confirm the surgical plan face to face.
After surgery, you may spend one or more nights in hospital depending on the procedure. Follow-up appointments are then typically scheduled to check wounds, change dressings, remove drains and stitches, and review your compression garment. A final review before departure allows your surgeon to confirm you are fit to travel and to provide written aftercare instructions.
Factors that may extend your stay
Combined procedures, longer operations and procedures that involve drains often require a longer stay. Personal factors such as a history of blood clots, slower healing or other medical conditions may also lead your surgeon to recommend extra time.
Occasionally, a minor complication such as a small seroma or wound concern is easier to manage while you are still in Istanbul. Booking a flexible return ticket, or allowing a few spare days, avoids the pressure of having to fly before you are ready.
Accommodation and practical planning
Choose accommodation close to the hospital or your surgeon's clinic, with a lift, comfortable seating and space to walk. Travelling with a companion is often helpful, particularly after body or combined procedures, when you may need help with daily tasks for the first few days.
Depending on the surgeon and procedure, treatments may be performed at leading private hospitals in Istanbul, including LIV Hospital Vadistanbul, Memorial Bahçelievler and selected Acıbadem hospitals. Your coordinator can help align your accommodation and appointments with the hospital location.
Cost and the length of stay
The length of your stay affects overall cost through accommodation, transfers and living expenses, alongside medical factors such as the surgeon, the hospital, anaesthesia, complexity, combined procedures and hospital nights. A personalised written quote follows assessment.
It can be tempting to shorten your stay to reduce expenses, but this should never override medical advice. Choose your surgeon and hospital based on medical quality, not price alone, and plan your time around a safe recovery.
Your stay should be individually planned
Every recovery is different. The appropriate length of stay can only be confirmed after an individual assessment and in light of how you recover after surgery. Your surgeon will advise when it is reasonable for you to fly home and how follow-up will continue remotely.
When planning, it is wiser to build in a few extra days than to book the shortest possible stay. A relaxed, unhurried recovery in Istanbul gives you and your surgeon the opportunity to address any early concerns before you travel.
