Zirconium Crowns in Istanbul
A zirconium crown is a strong, tooth-coloured ceramic cap that covers the whole of a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. Crowns are valuable for teeth that are already heavily restored, cracked or root-treated, but they require significant tooth reduction and should not be used to cosmetically alter healthy teeth when more conservative options exist.

What is Zirconium Crowns?
Zirconia is a durable ceramic used for crowns because of its strength and tooth-like colour. It can be used as monolithic zirconia, which is very strong and suited to back teeth, or layered with porcelain for greater translucency at the front of the mouth. Crowns can also sit on dental implants.
Because a crown covers the entire tooth, the tooth must be reduced on all sides to make room. On a healthy tooth, this removes a significant amount of sound structure and can irritate the nerve. Aggressive full-mouth crown preparations on healthy teeth, popularly described as 'Turkey teeth', have led to sensitivity, nerve damage, root canal treatment and gum problems for some patients. Careful case selection means crowns are recommended when a tooth genuinely needs full coverage, and veneers, bonding or whitening are considered first for cosmetic concerns.

Consultation & assessment
Through an online assessment, you share photographs, recent X-rays and your dental history confidentially. The dentist will consider whether crowns are genuinely indicated or whether a more conservative option might achieve your goals.
In Istanbul, an in-person examination with radiographs assesses each tooth individually, including nerve health, existing restorations and gum condition, before treatment is confirmed. You should receive a clear, tooth-by-tooth explanation of why each crown is recommended.
How the procedure is performed
Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, with the amount of reduction guided by the material and the tooth's condition. A digital scan or impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed.
The laboratory produces the zirconia crown, which is tried in to check fit, colour and contact with neighbouring teeth. It is then cemented or bonded and the bite is carefully adjusted.
Anaesthesia
Crown preparation is usually carried out under local anaesthesia. Teeth that have had root canal treatment may need little or none. You remain awake throughout.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–2
Sensitivity and gum tenderness around prepared teeth are common.
Days 3–7
Final crowns are fitted and the bite adjusted.
Weeks 1–2
Gums settle around the crown margins and sensitivity usually eases.
1–3 months
Review with your local dentist to check margins, bite and gum health.
Ongoing
Regular check-ups and good hygiene protect the underlying tooth from decay.
What to expect during the first week
- Avoid sticky or very hard foods while temporaries are in place
- Expect some temperature sensitivity
- Clean carefully around the gum margins
- Report a high bite, persistent throbbing pain or loose temporaries
When can I fly?
Flying is generally fine once crowns are fitted. Plan to travel after your final bite check.
When can I return to work?
Most women return to work the next day.
When can I exercise?
Exercise is usually unrestricted. A mouthguard is advisable for contact sports.
Appearance & aesthetics
Crowns leave no scars. Well-fitting margins should sit comfortably at or near the gumline.
Results
Well-made zirconia crowns can look natural and restore strength to weakened teeth. Consented before and after photographs of similar cases can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?
Zirconia crowns are durable and can last many years with good care, but they are not permanent. The tooth underneath can still develop decay at the margins, so hygiene and regular reviews are essential.
Potential risks and complications
- Significant, irreversible loss of tooth structure during preparation
- Tooth sensitivity after preparation
- Nerve damage leading to root canal treatment, more likely with aggressive preparation of healthy teeth
- Gum inflammation or recession at the crown margin
- Decay developing beneath the crown margin
- Chipping of layered porcelain or, rarely, fracture
- Bite problems or jaw discomfort if the bite is altered
- Wear of opposing teeth in some circumstances
- Need for future replacement
Choosing a surgeon
- Confirm the dentist is licensed and registered with the Turkish Dental Association (Türk Dişhekimleri Birliği), and ask about postgraduate training in prosthodontics, restorative or implant dentistry
- Ask how much tooth structure will be removed, why, and what more conservative alternatives were considered
- Review consented before and after photographs of similar cases during consultation, remembering that results vary between individuals
- Request a written treatment plan listing each tooth, the material, the laboratory used and the expected number of appointments
- Make sure there is a clear aftercare and follow-up plan, including what happens if a restoration chips or debonds after you return home

A stay of around 5–8 days is typical for crowns, allowing time for examination, preparation, laboratory work, try-in and bite review. Where root canal treatment or implants are needed first, the timeline will be longer.
