What is Teeth Whitening?
Whitening works by allowing peroxide to penetrate enamel and break down the pigment molecules responsible for staining. In-clinic whitening uses a higher-concentration gel with gum protection, while home whitening uses custom trays and a lower-concentration gel over several days or weeks. Many dentists combine both for a more stable result.
Whitening only changes the colour of natural teeth. Existing crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings will not lighten, so if you have visible restorations at the front, they may need replacing afterwards to match your new shade. Some types of discolouration, such as grey staining from certain medications or a darkened nerve-treated tooth, respond less predictably.
Who may be suitable?
- Healthy teeth and gums without untreated decay
- Yellowish or age-related discolouration and surface staining
- Women considering veneers or crowns who want to set a lighter base shade first
- Those who understand that existing restorations will not change colour
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
What can this treatment address?
- Yellowing of teeth with age
- Staining from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking
- A dull overall smile
- Preparing a base shade before other cosmetic dentistry
Consultation & assessment
During an online assessment, you share recent photographs in natural light and any details of existing restorations, confidentially. The dentist can advise whether whitening is likely to achieve your goals.
In Istanbul, an examination checks for decay, gum recession, cracks and existing restorations before whitening is confirmed. Your starting shade is recorded, and you are advised about sensitivity and realistic outcomes.
How the procedure is performed
For in-clinic whitening, the teeth are cleaned, the gums are protected with a barrier, and whitening gel is applied in several short cycles, sometimes with a light. The session usually takes around an hour or a little longer.
For home whitening, custom trays are made from a scan, and you apply a lower-strength gel for a set time each day as instructed. This can continue after you return home under the guidance of your local dentist.
Anaesthesia
No anaesthesia is needed. A desensitising agent may be applied before or after treatment to reduce sensitivity.
Recovery timeline
Day 1
Temporary sensitivity to temperature is common. Avoid strongly coloured foods and drinks.
Days 2–3
Sensitivity usually settles. A desensitising toothpaste helps.
Week 1
Continue home whitening if prescribed, following instructions carefully.
Week 2
The shade stabilises; this is the time to colour-match any new restorations.
Ongoing
Occasional top-ups may be needed as staining gradually returns.
What to expect during the first week
- Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry and smoking for at least 48 hours if possible
- Use a desensitising toothpaste if teeth feel sensitive
- Follow home tray instructions exactly and do not overuse the gel
- Contact your dentist if gum irritation or sensitivity is severe
When can I fly?
There are no flying restrictions after teeth whitening.
When can I return to work?
You can return to work the same day.
When can I exercise?
Exercise is unrestricted after whitening.
Appearance & aesthetics
Whitening leaves no scars. Temporary white spots or gum irritation usually settle within days.
Results
Most people see a noticeable lightening, but the degree varies with the type of staining and natural tooth colour. Existing restorations will not change colour. Consented before and after photographs can be reviewed during consultation. Results vary between individuals.

How long do results last?
Whitening is not permanent. The result can last for many months or longer, depending on diet, smoking and oral hygiene, and occasional top-up treatment is common.
Potential risks and complications
- Tooth sensitivity, usually temporary
- Gum irritation if gel contacts soft tissue
- Uneven results or temporary white spots
- Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings will not change colour and may then appear mismatched
- Limited effect on some types of internal or medication-related staining
- Overuse can increase sensitivity and is not advised
Choosing a surgeon
- Ensure whitening is carried out or supervised by a licensed dentist registered with the Turkish Dental Association
- Ask for an examination before whitening to rule out decay or cracks
- Ask how existing restorations will look afterwards and whether replacement may be advisable
- Review consented before and after photographs, remembering that results vary between individuals

Whitening alone usually requires only 1–3 days in Istanbul. It is often combined with other cosmetic dental treatment as the first step, so that new restorations can be matched to the lighter shade.
