Clitoral Hood Reduction in Istanbul

Clitoral hood reduction removes excess skin from the fold of tissue that covers the clitoris. It is most often performed alongside labiaplasty to create balanced proportions, and it requires a precise, conservative technique because of the sensitivity of the area. A private, confidential assessment helps you and your surgeon decide whether it is appropriate.

What is Clitoral Hood Reduction?

The clitoral hood, or prepuce, is a fold of skin that protects the clitoris. In some women it is large, has extra vertical or horizontal folds, or appears prominent after a labiaplasty has reduced the labia minora. Clitoral hood reduction removes some of this excess skin while keeping enough coverage to protect the clitoris.

The procedure is not intended to expose the clitoris, and it does not involve the clitoris itself. Because normal anatomical variation is wide and the evidence base for cosmetic genital surgery is still developing, professional bodies such as ACOG and RCOG advise careful counselling about realistic outcomes and risks, including changes in sensation.

Who may be suitable?

  • Adult women with excess or prominent clitoral hood skin causing discomfort or self-consciousness
  • Women having labiaplasty in whom the hood would otherwise appear disproportionate
  • Those with good general health and no active infection
  • Non-smokers, or women willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Women who understand the risk of altered sensation and have realistic expectations

What can this procedure address?

  • Excess, redundant or bulky clitoral hood skin
  • Extra skin folds alongside the hood
  • Imbalance between the hood and the labia after labiaplasty
  • Discomfort or irritation from excess skin in clothing

Consultation & assessment

Your journey usually begins with a confidential online assessment, where you describe your concerns and medical history and may send photographs privately through a secure channel. The surgeon can explain whether clitoral hood reduction, labiaplasty or a combination is likely to help.

Surgery is confirmed only after an in-person examination in Istanbul. The surgeon assesses the hood, labia and surrounding tissues and explains how they will preserve protective coverage and sensation. Your motivations, wellbeing and expectations are discussed openly before you give consent.

How the procedure is performed

The surgeon marks the excess skin carefully, often on both sides of the hood, and removes it using a precise, conservative technique. Removing too much can leave the clitoris exposed and oversensitive, so restraint is essential.

The wounds are closed with fine dissolvable stitches, and the result is designed to blend with the labia minora. Clitoral hood reduction is frequently performed at the same time as labiaplasty.

Anaesthesia

The procedure is commonly performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, or under general anaesthesia when combined with other procedures. An anaesthetist will assess you and explain the options beforehand.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1–3

Swelling, bruising and tenderness are expected. Rest, use cold packs wrapped in cloth as advised and take prescribed pain relief.

  2. Week 1

Discomfort eases. You attend a follow-up examination before flying home. Loose clothing remains more comfortable.

  3. Weeks 2–3

Most women resume normal daily activities as stitches dissolve. Some swelling persists.

  4. Weeks 4–6

Many women are cleared for intercourse, swimming and more strenuous exercise once healing is confirmed.

  5. 3–6 months

Residual swelling settles, sensation stabilises and the final result becomes clear.

What to expect during the first week

  • Wear loose cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing
  • Rinse gently with water after using the toilet and pat dry
  • Use cold packs wrapped in cloth for short periods if advised
  • Avoid baths, swimming and tampons
  • Report increasing pain, bleeding or signs of infection promptly

When can I fly?

Most women can fly home around 5–7 days after surgery once the surgeon has checked healing. Walk around the cabin regularly and stay hydrated to reduce the risk of blood clots on longer flights.

When can I return to work?

Many women return to desk-based work after about a week. More physical roles may need 2 weeks. Your surgeon will advise.

When can I exercise?

Gentle walking is encouraged immediately. Avoid gym work, running and swimming for around 4 weeks, and cycling or horse riding for around 6 weeks, or until your surgeon confirms healing.

When can I have sexual intercourse?

Intercourse is typically avoided for around 4–6 weeks while the wounds heal. Sensitivity may feel different initially; your surgeon will advise when to resume.

Scars

Scars are placed along natural folds beside the hood and usually become very difficult to see once healed, although this varies between individuals. Some firmness may persist for a few months.

Results

When performed conservatively, clitoral hood reduction can create a more proportionate appearance, especially alongside labiaplasty. Results vary between individuals. Consented before and after photographs may be reviewed privately during consultation to illustrate realistic outcomes.

How long do results last?

Results are generally long-lasting, though hormonal changes, childbirth and ageing may alter the appearance of the vulva over time.

Potential risks and complications

All surgical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and individual risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.

  • Bleeding or haematoma
  • Infection
  • Altered, reduced or heightened clitoral sensation
  • Over-resection leaving the clitoris exposed and oversensitive
  • Asymmetry or irregular contour
  • Wound separation or delayed healing
  • Painful or tight scarring
  • Need for revision surgery
  • Dissatisfaction with the result

Choosing a surgeon

  • Choose a surgeon with specialist training and specific experience in clitoral hood reduction, not only labiaplasty
  • Confirm registration with the Turkish Medical Association and membership of relevant professional societies, and verify these credentials independently rather than relying on marketing material.
  • Ask how the surgeon protects sensation and avoids over-resection
  • Review consented before and after photographs privately during consultation
  • Confirm hospital privileges and a clear written aftercare plan

Clitoral Hood Reduction: frequently asked questions

Is clitoral hood reduction usually done with labiaplasty?

Often, yes. Reducing the labia alone can make the hood appear more prominent, so many surgeons assess both together. It can also be performed on its own.

Will it affect sensation?

Surgeons aim to preserve sensation by working conservatively, but altered sensation is a recognised risk. Discuss this openly before deciding.

How long should I stay in Istanbul?

Typically 5–7 days, so your surgeon can check healing before you travel. Your surgeon will advise.
