What is Mons Pubis Reduction?

The mons pubis is the area of fatty tissue over the pubic bone. Weight changes, pregnancy, ageing and genetics can cause it to become fuller or to sag, sometimes becoming more noticeable after a tummy tuck tightens the abdomen above it. Some women find this visible in clothing or swimwear, or uncomfortable.

Mons pubis reduction uses liposuction to remove excess fat, a lift to remove loose skin, or a combination. It is frequently performed with abdominoplasty, because the two areas are closely connected. Normal variation is wide, and your surgeon will discuss what is realistic.

Who may be suitable?

  • Women with persistent fullness of the mons pubis that does not respond to diet and exercise
  • Those with sagging pubic skin, often after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Women having a tummy tuck in whom mons fullness would otherwise stand out
  • Those at a stable weight and in good general health
  • Non-smokers, or those able to stop before and after surgery
  • Women with realistic expectations

What can this procedure address?

  • Excess fat over the pubic bone
  • Sagging or ptotic mons pubis
  • Visible bulge in fitted clothing or swimwear
  • Imbalance between the abdomen and pubic area after tummy tuck or weight loss
  • Discomfort or hygiene difficulty from overhanging tissue

Consultation & assessment

Your journey usually starts with a confidential online assessment, where you share your medical history, weight history and goals, and may send photographs privately through a secure channel. The surgeon can explain whether liposuction, a lift or a combined approach may suit you, and whether a tummy tuck should be considered at the same time.

Surgery is confirmed only after an in-person examination in Istanbul, where the surgeon assesses skin quality, fat distribution and the relationship with the abdomen and labia majora. Your expectations and wellbeing are discussed openly before you consent.

How the procedure is performed

When fullness is mainly due to fat and the skin is firm, liposuction through small incisions may be enough. A thin cannula removes fat to create a flatter contour.

When the skin is loose, a mons lift removes a strip of skin and tissue through a low horizontal incision, usually within the bikini line, and lifts the remaining tissue. In a tummy tuck, this is often incorporated into the abdominoplasty incision.

Liposuction and lifting may be combined. The surgeon aims for a natural, proportionate result, avoiding over-flattening.

Anaesthesia

Mons pubis reduction is usually performed under general anaesthesia, particularly when combined with a tummy tuck. Liposuction alone may sometimes be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation. An anaesthetist will assess you and explain the options.

Recovery timeline

  1. Days 1–3

Swelling and bruising are common and may extend into the labia. Rest, wear compression garments as advised and walk gently.

  2. Week 1

Discomfort eases. You attend a check-up and any drains or dressings are reviewed before flying home.

  3. Weeks 2–3

Most women return to desk-based work. Swelling continues to settle, and compression is usually still worn.

  4. Weeks 4–6

Many women resume more strenuous exercise and intercourse after review.

  5. 3–6 months

Swelling resolves and the final contour becomes clear. Scars begin to fade.

What to expect during the first week

  • Wear compression garments as instructed
  • Walk gently several times a day to support circulation
  • Expect swelling and bruising that may extend into the labia
  • Keep incisions clean and dry as advised
  • Avoid heavy lifting and baths
  • Report increasing swelling, pain or fever promptly

When can I fly?

Most women can fly home around 7–10 days after surgery, or longer if combined with a tummy tuck. Surgery and long flights both increase the risk of blood clots, so wear compression stockings or garments as advised, walk regularly and keep well hydrated.

When can I return to work?

Many women return to desk-based work after 1–2 weeks. If combined with a tummy tuck, 2–3 weeks or more may be needed. Your surgeon will advise.

When can I exercise?

Gentle walking is encouraged immediately. Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for around 4–6 weeks, or longer if combined with abdominoplasty.

When can I have sexual intercourse?

Intercourse is typically avoided for around 4–6 weeks, while swelling settles and incisions heal. Your surgeon will advise based on the extent of surgery.

Scars

Liposuction leaves small scars that usually fade well. A lift leaves a horizontal scar low on the abdomen, usually within the bikini line. Scars typically take 12–18 months to mature and fade, and their final appearance varies.

Results

Mons pubis reduction can create a flatter, more proportionate contour. Results vary between individuals. Consented before and after photographs may be reviewed privately during consultation to illustrate realistic outcomes.

How long do results last?

Results are generally long-lasting if your weight remains stable. Significant weight gain, pregnancy and ageing can affect the result.
