Breast Augmentation in Istanbul
Breast augmentation uses implants to increase breast volume and improve shape and proportion. It is a highly individual operation: the right implant, placement and incision depend on your anatomy, your tissue and the result you hope to achieve, and the decision should include an honest understanding of long-term implant care.

What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) places a breast implant behind each breast to increase volume and projection. Most implants used today have a silicone outer shell filled with cohesive silicone gel, which holds its form and feels closer to natural breast tissue than older designs. Saline-filled implants are still available in some settings. Implants come in round and anatomical (teardrop) shapes, in different profiles that determine how far they project from the chest, and with smooth or textured surfaces.
Implant choice is not simply about size. Your surgeon will measure your chest width, breast base, skin stretch and tissue thickness to recommend a range of implants that will sit in proportion with your frame. Choosing an implant that is too large for your tissues can increase the risk of stretching, rippling, visible edges and later revision. Breast augmentation adds volume; it does not lift a breast that has significant drooping, which may require a lift as well.
Who may be suitable?
- Women who would like fuller breasts or improved proportion with their figure
- Women who have lost upper-pole volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, with minimal drooping
- Those with mild asymmetry that can be balanced with different implant sizes
- Women in good general health, ideally non-smokers or able to stop well before surgery
- Those with up-to-date breast screening appropriate to their age and no unexplained breast lumps
- Women who understand that implants are not lifetime devices and may need future surgery
- Ideally those who have completed or paused family planning, as pregnancy can change results
What can this procedure address?
- Small breasts or breasts that have not developed as hoped
- Loss of fullness in the upper breast after children or weight change
- Mild differences in size between the two breasts
- Clothing fit and body proportion concerns
- Desire for a fuller, more rounded breast shape
Consultation & assessment
Your journey begins with a confidential online assessment. You send photographs securely along with your medical history, any previous breast imaging and a description of the result you hope for. The surgeon's team reviews these to advise whether augmentation alone is appropriate or whether a lift may also be needed, and gives an initial idea of the implant options and approach.
Surgery is confirmed only after an in-person examination in Istanbul. Your surgeon will take measurements, assess skin elasticity and tissue cover, discuss implant shape, profile, surface and size (often using sizers), and explain placement and incision choices. This is also the time to discuss BIA-ALCL, capsular contracture, breast implant illness, breastfeeding, future mammography and the likelihood of further surgery over your lifetime. You should receive written information and know which implant manufacturer will be used.
How the procedure is performed
The implant is inserted through one of several incisions. The inframammary incision, in the crease under the breast, is the most common and gives the surgeon good control of the pocket. A periareolar incision, around the lower edge of the areola, can hide the scar well but may be associated with greater risk of changes to nipple sensation and breastfeeding. A transaxillary incision in the armpit avoids a scar on the breast but is less widely used.
The implant can be placed in a pocket above the chest muscle (subglandular or subfascial) or partly beneath it (submuscular or dual-plane). Subglandular placement can suit women with sufficient breast tissue and may involve less post-operative discomfort. Dual-plane placement, where the upper part of the implant sits under the pectoral muscle, gives more soft-tissue cover in slim women, may reduce visible rippling, and is thought to interfere less with mammography, although the muscle may cause the implant to move when it contracts.
Many surgeons use techniques intended to reduce bacterial contamination, such as antibiotic irrigation and minimal handling of the implant, which are thought to lower the risk of capsular contracture. The incisions are closed in layers with dissolvable stitches, dressings are applied and you will be fitted with a supportive surgical bra. Drains are not always needed.
Anaesthesia
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia administered by a qualified anaesthetist, who will review your health and medications beforehand. Local anaesthetic is often added to the surgical area to help with comfort after you wake. Most women stay overnight in hospital for monitoring, pain control and an early check by the surgeon.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Tightness, swelling and aching across the chest are expected, more so with dual-plane placement. You will rest, walk short distances regularly and wear your surgical bra day and night.
Week 1
Discomfort usually eases with simple pain relief. A post-operative check before you fly home reviews the wounds and implant position. Avoid lifting and reaching above shoulder height.
Weeks 2–3
Most women return to desk-based work and light daily activities. Swelling continues to settle and the breasts often still look high and firm.
Week 6
Many surgeons allow a gradual return to the gym, including upper-body exercise, and a move to a supportive soft bra. Your surgeon will advise.
3–6 months
The implants settle lower and the breasts soften into a more natural shape. Scars begin to fade from pink towards a paler line.
12 months
Scars continue to mature. A review of your result and breast health is sensible, and you should continue routine self-examination.
What to expect during the first week
- Wear your surgical bra continuously unless told otherwise
- Sleep on your back, slightly propped up, for the first few weeks
- Walk gently several times a day to support circulation
- Avoid lifting anything heavier than a kettle and avoid stretching your arms overhead
- Keep dressings clean and dry and follow showering instructions
- Contact your team promptly about sudden swelling on one side, fever or increasing redness
When can I fly?
Most surgeons are comfortable with a flight home around 7–10 days after breast augmentation, once you have been reviewed and your wounds are healing well. Long-haul flights carry a small but real risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), so stay hydrated, walk the aisle regularly, wear compression stockings if advised and avoid lifting heavy luggage yourself.
When can I return to work?
Women with desk-based roles often return after 1–2 weeks. Jobs involving lifting, repeated arm movement or physical exertion usually need 4–6 weeks, and your surgeon may give specific guidance depending on implant placement.
When can I exercise?
Gentle walking is encouraged from the first day. Lower-body exercise without bouncing may often resume after about 3–4 weeks, while running, upper-body weights, chest exercises and swimming usually wait until around 6 weeks. Pectoral exercises may need more caution after dual-plane placement.
Scars
Scars are usually around 4–5 cm, placed in the breast crease, around the areola or in the armpit depending on the chosen incision. They are typically pink and slightly raised for some months before softening and fading. Scar quality depends on genetics, skin type and aftercare; some women form thicker or darker scars.
Results
You will see a change in volume immediately, but implants often sit high and firm initially and take several months to settle into their final position. The final shape depends on your tissue, implant choice and healing. Results vary between individuals. Consented before and after photographs of comparable patients are reviewed during consultation to help set realistic expectations.

How long do results last?
Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Many last well for many years, but the chance of needing further surgery for capsular contracture, rupture, position change or a wish to change size increases over time. Natural ageing, pregnancy and weight change also affect the breast around the implant. Silicone implant rupture is often silent, so your surgeon may recommend periodic imaging. Keep your implant card and device documentation.
Potential risks and complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and individual risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.
- Bleeding and haematoma, which may require a return to theatre
- Infection, which may in some cases require implant removal
- Capsular contracture, where scar tissue around the implant tightens, causing firmness, distortion or pain
- Implant rupture or deflation, and silicone gel leakage that may not cause symptoms
- Implant malposition, rotation of shaped implants, rippling or visible edges
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent
- Asymmetry, unfavourable scarring and the need for revision surgery
- BIA-ALCL, a rare lymphoma associated mainly with textured implants, usually presenting as late swelling
- Symptoms some women describe as breast implant illness, which are not yet well understood
- Effects on breastfeeding and on mammography interpretation; risks of anaesthesia and blood clots
Choosing a surgeon
- Specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, with registration you can verify through the Turkish Medical Association and relevant national and international societies

Breast Augmentation: frequently asked questions
How long should I stay in Istanbul after breast augmentation?
Most women stay around 7–10 days. This covers consultation, surgery, an overnight stay and post-operative checks. Your surgeon will confirm the timing based on your recovery.
When can I fly home?
Usually after 7–10 days, once your surgeon has reviewed you. Walk regularly during the flight, stay hydrated, wear compression stockings if advised and ask for help with heavy bags.
Should I choose implants above or below the muscle?
Placement depends on how much natural tissue you have. Women with thin tissue often benefit from dual-plane placement for better cover and less rippling; women with more breast tissue may suit subglandular placement. Your surgeon will explain the trade-offs for your anatomy.
What is BIA-ALCL and should I be worried?
BIA-ALCL is a rare lymphoma of the immune system that can develop in the capsule around a breast implant, associated mainly with textured implants. It usually appears as swelling years after surgery. It is uncommon, but it is important to understand, to know your implant surface type and to report any late swelling promptly.
Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?
Many women can. An inframammary incision and placement beneath the gland or muscle tend to preserve the ducts, while incisions around the areola may carry a greater chance of affecting breastfeeding and sensation. Discuss your plans so the approach can take them into account.
How much does breast augmentation cost in Turkey?
Cost reflects the surgeon's experience, the hospital, anaesthesia, the implant brand and type, overnight stay, combined procedures, accommodation and aftercare. You receive a personalised written quote after assessment.
Can I see before and after photos?
Yes. Consented before and after photographs of comparable patients are reviewed during consultation to help you understand what may be achievable for your body. Results vary between individuals.
