What is Breast Reduction?
Large, heavy breasts (macromastia) can cause persistent neck, back and shoulder aches, grooving from bra straps, skin irritation and infection beneath the breasts, and difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit. A breast reduction reduces the volume and weight of the breasts, reshapes them and lifts the nipple and areola to a higher position.
Because tissue is removed and the nipple is moved, breast reduction can affect nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed. Many women retain sensation and some can breastfeed, but this cannot be promised, and the extent of change depends on the technique and amount of tissue removed. Breast screening should be up to date before surgery, and removed tissue is usually sent for routine pathology examination.

- Women who understand the possible effects on sensation and breastfeeding

Consultation & assessment
Start with a confidential online assessment, sending photographs securely with your health history, symptoms, bra size and any recent mammogram or ultrasound. The team will advise on suitability and the likely technique.
Surgery is confirmed after an in-person examination in Istanbul, where your surgeon assesses breast size, skin and nipple position, discusses the target size, scars and the effects on sensation and breastfeeding, and may arrange pre-operative imaging if needed.
How the procedure is performed
Most reductions use a vertical (lollipop) or anchor (inverted-T) incision pattern. Excess tissue, fat and skin are removed and the remaining breast is reshaped, while the nipple and areola are moved upwards on a pedicle of tissue that preserves their blood supply and, as far as possible, nerves and ducts.
In very large reductions, the nipple may occasionally need to be removed and reattached as a graft, which results in loss of sensation and breastfeeding ability. Liposuction may be used to refine the sides of the chest.
Incisions are closed in layers, drains may be placed for a short time, and a supportive surgical bra is fitted.
Anaesthesia
Breast reduction is carried out under general anaesthesia by a qualified anaesthetist, with an overnight stay of one or two nights for monitoring, pain control and drain care.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Tightness, swelling and soreness; drains, if used, are usually removed within a day or two.
Week 1
Pain becomes more manageable. Many women already notice relief from the weight.
Weeks 2–3
Return to desk-based work and light activities. Wounds are checked for healing, particularly where scars meet.
Week 6
Gradual return to exercise, with a supportive sports bra.
3–6 months
Swelling settles and the shape softens. Scars remain visible but begin to flatten.
12 months
Scars mature further and the breasts reach their long-term shape.
What to expect during the first week
- Wear your surgical bra continuously
- Sleep on your back, propped up
- Walk gently to support circulation
- Avoid lifting and overhead reaching
- Follow drain and dressing instructions
- Report fever, redness, wound breakdown or nipple darkening promptly
When can I fly?
Most women are advised to wait around 10–12 days before flying after breast reduction, and only after a surgeon's review. Long flights increase the risk of blood clots, so walk regularly, keep hydrated and wear compression stockings if advised.
When can I return to work?
Desk-based work is often possible after 2–3 weeks; physically demanding jobs may need 4–6 weeks.
When can I exercise?
Walking from the first day is encouraged. Most surgeons allow light exercise after 3–4 weeks and strenuous or upper-body exercise from around 6 weeks. Many women find exercise easier and more enjoyable afterwards.
Scars
Scars run around the areola and vertically to the crease, often with a horizontal scar along the crease. They are permanent but usually fade over 12–18 months. Some women develop thicker, raised or darker scars.
Results
Breasts are immediately smaller and lifted, and many women report relief from discomfort soon after surgery. The final shape develops over several months. Results vary between individuals. Consented before and after photographs are reviewed during consultation.

How long do results last?
Results are long-lasting, though breasts continue to age and can change with weight gain, pregnancy and menopause. Significant weight gain can enlarge the breasts again.
